You know sometimes I am really disappointed by the way people talk.
It’s not the bratty kids with whiny voices. It’s not the pompous snobs with articulated insults. It’s not the babbling chatterers screaming into their cell phones.
No.
It’s the shy student called upon in class to answer a simple question that she knows the answer to, but already decides that she is too timid to communicate it before answering.
It’s the voiceless teenager in the back of the bus that wants to leave because his stop has arrived, but decides to wait until the next stop because the bus driver did not hear his weak cry to open the back door.
It’s the strong-minded, politically savvy friend who wants to persuade and convince, but cannot because he lacks the diction, syntax, and passionate tone to verbalize in a coherent and confident fashion that matches his thoughts.
All of these people lack one thing… Conviction.
I urge you to speak with conviction.

Taylor Mali, who has just become one of my role models, gets it right in his inspirational slam poetry. I dare you to watch this. It’s worth it.
